Anne symons (b. 1993) is an artist based in New York City making sculpture, painting, clothes, and ceremony. Her interdisciplinary work holds focus on transmuting waste into things of beauty, use, and communion.
Raised in the foothills of North Carolina, Anne completed BAs in Art and american Studies at UNC Chapel Hill before learning to sew, dye, and weave at Penland School of Craft.
The artist’s work in textiles includes patchwork, embroidery, costumes, sets, and clothing for Care Instructions, a line of one-off garments. Cloth is the spring board for the painting and sculptural work, which mis/uses craft technique and bring new life to the artist’s junk collection treasure trove. Their practice is one of devotion and magic - scrap alchemy is the artist’s shorthand for their process of collecting discards and facilitating affinity between them through painting, carving, sewing, balancing, repairing, dyeing, destroying, transforming.
